Description
Street photography is the foundation of my practice, not as a way of documenting the world as it appears, but as a means of exploring the space where reality gives way to the uncanny. Without staging or intervention, I photograph spontaneous moments in cities around the world, embracing chance, movement, reflections, darkness, and shifting light to transform ordinary urban scenes into dreamlike images.
Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the tension between beauty and unease. Photography is a form of personal exorcism for me—an attempt to reveal the hidden poetry of everyday life and the extraordinary concealed within the ordinary. Through my work, I invite viewers to pause, question perception, and reflect on the fragile boundary between the real and the surreal.
Biography
Victor Vargas Villafuerte (born in 1980 in Mexico City) is a Mexican photographer and filmmaker based in Montreal. His work explores the intersection of documentary photography, constructed imagery, and street photography, examining the relationship between reality and imagination through themes of death, belief, identity, and the ambiguity of everyday life.
After studying Actuarial Science at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), he turned to the visual arts in 2005 and later studied photography at Dawson College in Montreal. Alongside his conceptual and documentary projects, he maintains an ongoing street photography practice in cities around the world. His work has received international recognition, including an award at the Sony World Photography Awards, while his documentary Paal has been honored at several international film festivals and nominated for Mexico’s Ariel Awards.
