During one of Cebu’s largest religious festivals, thousands of devotees gather at the city’s famous Basilica, where hourly Masses continue from morning until late at night. As each service ends, the surrounding streets transform into a sea of people flowing in every direction.

While photographing the worshippers leaving the church, I noticed an elderly woman, bent with age, quietly making her way through the crowd. Moments later, I saw her again standing silently in the middle of the procession, asking for alms with nothing more than a gentle expression and an outstretched hand.

As the crowd moved around her, she remained completely still. When the church bell rang, announcing the beginning of the next Mass, the moment seemed suspended between movement and stillness—a quiet reminder of faith, poverty, and perseverance amid the overwhelming energy of the festival.
