Description
The city rarely presents itself as a single, uninterrupted scene. Reflections, passing figures, and shifting light overlap to create fleeting relationships that exist only for an instant before dissolving again. By photographing through layers of glass, the image transforms an ordinary street into a space where reality and reflection become inseparable. Familiar strangers appear connected, then disconnected, inviting viewers to question what belongs to the street, what belongs to the reflection, and how easily our perception constructs a narrative from fragments.
Biography
Hon Chow (Joseph) Lai explores the interplay of light, motion, and form through street, narrative, and fine art photography. Born in Taiwan and raised in New York, he draws on both Eastern and Western cultural influences, shaping his distinctive visual perspective.
After earning an MBA from New York University, Joseph built a career in luxury and fashion branding, working with renowned brands including Bulgari, Chanel, Vacheron Constantin, Georg Jensen, Ferrari, and Louis XIII. This experience refined his aesthetic sensibility and deepened his understanding of visual storytelling, which now informs his photographic practice.
His work has been recognised by the New York Photography Awards, PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris, the Tokyo International Foto Awards, Refocus Awards, and the Annual Photography Awards, and has been exhibited internationally, including in Taipei, Kyoto, and Budapest. His latest projects include the 2026 KG+ solo exhibition Harmony in Contrast and his curatorial debut at Pavilion Taipei and Pavilion Hong Kong.
