Description
Near Yurakucho Station, a boy and a young woman walk through a dark passageway toward a lively plaza filled with casual restaurants, a shopping complex, and escalators leading underground. Both look ahead; the boy’s face reflects amazement, while the young woman gazes in the same direction.
Behind them stands a Chinese dumpling restaurant that has since disappeared following redevelopment. The photograph captures both a fleeting moment of childhood curiosity and a fragment of an urban landscape that no longer exists.
Biography
Kaori Hijikata is a street photographer based in Tokyo, Japan. She began photographing the streets of her native city in 2021 and has since expanded her practice to other regions of Japan, intuitively capturing everyday urban life.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Head On Landscape Awards Finalist Exhibition (Australia), the Moment Street Photo Awards Exhibition (Poland), the Ballarat International Foto Biennale (Australia), and the Tokyo Street Photography Festival. She was a finalist in the Head On Landscape Awards (2025) and the Moment Street Photo Awards (2023).
