I was raised in Tapalpa, Jalisco, a town in western Mexico. Here, an 80-year-old tradition known as the Flower Battle takes place every Independence Day.
A parade of trucks decorated with Santa María flowers moves through the streets accompanied by music, costumes, and celebration. When the parade ends, people begin throwing flowers at one another in a symbolic battle involving men, women, and children alike. Although punches are sometimes exchanged, participants embrace afterward as a gesture of reconciliation.
Amid laughter and showers of Santa María flowers, the celebration transforms symbolic conflict into a reaffirmation of the community’s identity.
